What Are Sunnah Hijama Points?
Sunnah Hijama points refer to the specific locations on the body where the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) practiced or recommended cupping therapy. These points have been documented in various Hadith collections and are considered the most beneficial locations for Hijama treatment. At Safa Multispeciality Clinic and Hijama Center in Ahmednagar, our trained practitioners are well-versed in both Sunnah points and modern cupping techniques.
The Key Sunnah Hijama Points
1. Al-Akhda'ain (Jugular Veins Area)
Located on both sides of the neck where the jugular veins run. This is one of the most commonly referenced Sunnah points for Hijama. Cupping at these points is traditionally recommended for headaches, facial conditions, throat issues, and ear problems. The area corresponds to important blood vessels and nerve pathways.
2. Al-Kahil (Between the Shoulders)
The point between the shoulder blades at the upper back is known as Al-Kahil. This is perhaps the most frequently mentioned Sunnah point for Hijama. It is believed to be beneficial for general health maintenance, detoxification, and treating conditions affecting the upper body including neck stiffness and shoulder pain.
3. Top of the Head (Yafookh)
Cupping at the crown of the head (Yafookh) is mentioned in Hadith for treating mental clarity issues, headaches, and various neurological concerns. This point is considered especially beneficial for conditions related to the brain, memory, and concentration.
4. Hip Area (Al-Warik)
The hip region is another Sunnah point for Hijama, particularly recommended for sciatica, lower back pain, and hip joint issues. Cupping at this area helps improve blood flow to the lower body and can provide relief from chronic pain in the lumbar and pelvic regions.
5. Top of the Foot (Dhahrul Qadam)
Cupping on the top of the foot is mentioned for treating various conditions. This point is traditionally used for menstrual irregularities, skin conditions, and general blood purification. The feet contain numerous nerve endings that connect to various organs throughout the body.
Recommended Days for Hijama
According to Hadith literature, certain days of the Islamic (Hijri) month are considered most beneficial for Hijama:
- 17th of the Hijri month: Considered one of the best days for cupping
- 19th of the Hijri month: Another highly recommended day
- 21st of the Hijri month: Also mentioned as beneficial
- Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: Preferred days of the week for Hijama
While these days are traditionally preferred, Hijama can be performed on any day based on medical need and the practitioner's assessment.
Additional Cupping Points Used in Practice
Beyond the Sunnah points, modern Hijama practitioners also use additional points based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and contemporary understanding of anatomy:
- Upper Back Points: For respiratory issues, asthma, and lung conditions
- Mid-Back Points: For digestive problems and stomach conditions
- Lower Back Points: For kidney health and lower back pain
- Knee Area: For joint pain and arthritis
